SCHOOL NEWS: NEW MUSIC SCHOOL OPENS - 17th November 2000

DAME JANET BAKER OPENS MUSIC SCHOOL

Dame Janet Baker CH, DBE was guest of honour at the opening of the new Music School at Aldenham School on Friday 17th November, when she unveiled a plaque before an audience of parents, staff, pupils, Heads of local schools and School Governors, including The Lord Vincent of Coleshill, former Chief of Defence Staff and military advisor to the Government on defence matters.

Following a welcome by Chairman of Governors Mr John Woodrow the new Headmaster Mr Richard Harman said:  "This is a wonderful facility for Aldenham and we are delighted that Dame Janet, one of this century's leading singers, was prepared and able to show her support by performing the official opening.  We are confident that under the excellent guidance of Director of Music Mr John Wyatt our pupils will gain enormous benefit from the opportunities that this facility will provide for learning and performing."

The Music School, which has been in use since the start of the new school year in September is situated in the skilfully adapted former Chapel.  The building, which started life as a Chapel before becoming a gymnasium and then home to the Design Technology Department, has been beautifully converted into a 2-storey facility boasting a recital room, a recording studio, a specially sound proofed percussion room, seven practice rooms and offices.

The Music School marks the last project of the Aldenham School Quatercentenary Appeal which has been generously supported by many Old Aldenhamians, parents and friends of the School.

Following the opening by Dame Janet, guests were entertained by a short recital by pupils from the School.
