R Allden     McGill’s 1934 – 1936

I find now (82 years) that my memory is failing but it remembers the Potty Bat which made frequent contact with my person, particularly during the first few weeks when I failed to comply with School and House customs.

I also recall that a member of Mosely’s Black  Shirts used to stand in the road outside the School gates and try to talk to pupils – but we were told not to pay any attention nor to shout back at him.  This was probably circa 1936.

A more light hearted memory, circa 1935 was when a confectionary manufacturer, maybe Cadburys, invented the Milky Way type chocolate bar – they had 3 flavours and needed market support to find the favourite – so they came to Aldenham and distributed them to us all and we had to vote for the best one.

A memorable occasion!!

I also recall seeing the glow in the sky from the School when Crystal Palace was destroyed by fire.

We seemed to live a rather introverted existence in those days with very little contact with the outside world and, of course, there were no girls among the pupils.

Not very interesting for your class I am afraid.
