HALFORD HEWITT TOURNAMENT 2004

2 April - 1st Round v Sherborne at Deal
Result Lost 1-4
Team RA Alter & D Rawlinson Won 7 & 6
  SP Radin & PJR Marsh Lost 2 & 1
  RJ Coombes & RD Hall Lost 5 & 4
  DJ McMonagle & S Moffat Lost 3 & 2
  PJ Easby & SGO Williams Lost 3 & 2

Without Joel Bloomfield and Guy Green, we knew we would find the going tough but the team selected had a unique blend of youth and experience. For Bob Coombes, this was his 55th consecutive Halford Hewitt – what a stunning achievement! Phil Marsh, whilst not challenging Bob’s record, has played many times and was recalled after an absence of seven years. Dick Hall and Scott Moffat both played in their first Hewitt although neither is in the full bloom of youth! We started strongly, Scott holing a magnificent 30 foot putt on the 2nd, but by the time we got to the 9th, we found ourselves down in all but the first match. Robert Alter and David Rawlinson played solid golf and duly thrashed the Sherborne sacrificial pair at the 12th. The remaining matches gradually edged away from us and it was all over before we got to the 17th.  The team deserves credit for a spirited performance and it was a great match for the OA Barmy Army who, as usual, travelled down to Deal to support the team.

Halford Hewitt Plate

2 April v Glenalmond at Princes, Sandwich
Result Won 2-1
Team RA Alter & RD Hall Won 3 & 2
  SP Radin & K Whittaker Lost 4 & 3
  SGO Williams & DJ McMonagle Won 2 & 1

2 April v Kings Canterbury at Princes, Sandwich
Result Lost 0-3
Team RA Alter & SP Radin Lost 3 & 2
  RD Hall & DJ McMonagle Lost 5 & 4
  SGO Williams & PJ Easby Lost 3 & 2

We got off to a great start again in the Plate with Ken Whittaker making his first appearance in the team on Friday morning (indeed, any appearance was quite remarkable after a night drowning the sorrows of the previous day!). In the afternoon, we came up against a very strong Kings Canterbury side and we could not hold them. Ah well, perhaps next year?
